During the Iranian Revolution, the US embassy was taken over by Iranians on November 4 1979. Fifty two hostages were taken by the Iranians, all of which were Americans. The hostages were held for 444 days, November 4 1979 through January 20 1981. The hostages were taken because the Iranian leader Shah Mohammad was over thrown, he later got medical attention from the US.
